Cold weather and parking issues might have reduced the numbers of people that attended this year’s South Okanagan Healthy Living Fair, but organizers say it was still a successful year.

“We think it went pretty well. We counted about 2,000 people that came through the doors,” said organizer Crystal Froese. In previous years, those numbers have topped 3,000. “Maybe a little bit lower than we hoped, but it was bitterly cold and parking is always an issue for some members of the community.”

The annual health awards, recognizing individuals and organizations who have shown an ongoing interest in improving community health, were handed out Friday afternoon following the address by nutritionist Leslie Bieck, the keynote speaker.

First Nations Champion went to Theresa Gabriel, a member of the Osoyoos Indian Band council who volunteers her time facilitating fitness classes for the community members; Health and Fitness Educator went to personal trainer Jorg Mardian; Seniors Initiative to Inez Storie, Glory Sly and Doreene Rowe of the Penticton Seniors Drop in Centre; and Youth Initiative to Matt Baran on behalf of the Penticton Indian Band Canoe family.
